Organisms and their habitats Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is an environment?
An environment is the living and non-living things that surround us/living organisms
Or
An environment is the composition of biotic and abiotic factors that surround a living organism.
What is a habitat?
A habitat is where an organism lives: A space that provides a living organism with food, shelter, water, gases(O2 & Co2) and its own kind to reproduce with.
What is an adaptation?
An adaptation is a feature that an organism may possess to aid it in living in its habitat or to obtain its living necessities.
What are the two factors of an environment?
Biotic and Abiotic factors
What is an abiotic factor of an environment?
The abiotic(physical) factors of an environment are the non-living components of the environment like water, temperature, and humidity.
What is a biotic factor of an environment?
The biotic factors of an environment are the living components like plants and other animals
What is a community?
A community is a collective of species of different kinds living together in a habitat/environment.
What is a population?
A population is a collective of the same species living together in a habitat/environment.
What is a niche?
A niche refers to a specific task or role only one organism of a community can do.
What is an aquatic habitat?
A habitat found in water bodies.
What unique abiotic factors come into play in an aquatic environment?
Water level and movement
Water depth
Oxygen level
Water clarity
Saltinity
What is a terrestrial habitat?
A habitat found on land
What are the physical factors unique to a terrestrial habitat?
Soil:
- Particle size
- Water retention
- Organic matter (Nutients
- Oxygen/air level
