organisms that cause disease Flashcards
what is the definition of pathogen
A microorganism which causes disease
what are the 4 pathogens
virus
protoctista
Fungi
Bacteria
How does a virus invade a host
invade cell
take over genetic machinery
cause cell to create more copies of the virus cell
Host cell eventually bursts
releases viral cells which infect healthy cells
how does a bacteria cause damage
when in cell they release waste products which are toxic to the host and reproduce rapidly
what conditions are best for bacteria cells
Moist and warm conditions
how do fungi cause damage
fungus lives on skin
hyphae grow underneath skin
can also send out specialised reproductive hyphae- to grow to surface of skin and release spores
how do protoctista cause damage to a host
enter host cells and feed on contents whilst they grow
what pathogen causes malaria
Plasmodium
what is the vector for malaria
Female anopheles mosquito
What are the three viral infection
HIV/ AIDS
INFLUENZA
TMV TOBACCO MOSAIC VIRUS
What are the three bacterial diseases
tuberculosis
bacterial meningitis
ringrot
what are the three fungal infections
Black sigatoka
ringworm
athlete foot
what are the two diseases caused by protoctista
malaria
