Stimuli
Organisms respond to a variety of factors in their environment
Orientation responses
They do this by moving themselves towards or away from the stimulus depending on whether it is beneficial or detrimental.
A direction of movement TOWARDS a stimulus is ?
Positive
A direction of movement AWAY from the stimulus is?
Negative
Direction movement in plants are called?
Tropisms
Direct movements in animals are called?
Taxes
Eugelena swims towards the light
POSITIVE PHOTOtaxis
A lion follows the scent of its prey
Positive chemotaxis
Roots moving away from sunlight
Negative phototropism
Nastic response
are movements of PLANT organs in response to a non-directional stimuli.
E.g. flowers opening and closing at different times of the day due to temperature or light intensity
random movement which has no relation to the direction of the stimulus in response from animals
kinesis response.
Orthokinesis
A change in the speed of the movement
E.g. higher humidity slaters will move slower than they would in lower humidity
Kinesis
This is a random movement which has no relation to the direction of the stimulus. NON DIRECTIONAL RESPONSE
Klinokinesis
(think of a clock turning)
A change in the rate of turning
E.g flatworms turn rapidly in the light rather than in dark areas.
