Origins of psychology Flashcards
(7 cards)
Who came up with introspection?
Wilhelm Wundt.
Define introspection.
The study of the mind by breaking up conscious awareness into basic structures of thoughts, images and sensations.
Who was the first person to open a lab dedicated to psychology?
Wilhelm Wundt.
What techniques did Wilhelm Wundt use?
He used scientific methods. His studies were recorded under highly controlled conditions using the same standardised procedures every time which allowed procedures to be replicated.
Define empiricism.
The idea that all experiences can be obtained through the senses.
What two assumptions did Wundt make?
1) Our behaviour is determined (caused).
2) If our behaviour is determined then we can guess how humans can behave.
Why was Wundt’s idea criticised?
His ideas were vague.
His experiments were repeated but the same results were not found.
Also, it gives us very little knowledge on why/what causes our behaviour.
