16
Q

What are the rule of 3s for T spine?

A

T1-T3, 12 SP in same plane as TP
T4-T6, 11 SP half segment down
T7-T9, 10 SP full segment down

17
Q

What is type 1 spinal mechanics?

A

TONGO

Type 1, neutral position, group, S and R opposite

18
Q

What is type 2 spinal mechanics?

A

Single segment, non neutral, S and R is same direction

19
Q

Do scalenes elevate or depress ribs? What scalenes move what ribs?

A

Scalenes elevate
I woke up at 1AM 2P
Rib 1- ant and middle
Rib 2- post

20
Q

What ribs do what rib motions?

A
Rib 1- 50:50 Pump to Bucket
Rib 2- 90:10 P to B
Rib 3- 80:20 P to B
...
Rib 7- 40:60 P to B
...
Rib 11 and 12- caliper
21
Q

What muscle influences caliper rib motion restriction?

A

Quadratus lumborum

22
Q

What is the pneumonic for rib dysfunctions?

A

BITE
Bottom rib is key rib for inhalation SD
Top rib is key rib for exhalation SD

23
Q

What nerve root does bicep reflex test?
What nerve root does brachioradialis reflex test?
What nerve root does triceps reflex test?

A

Biceps- C5
Brachioradialis- C6
Triceps- C7

24
Q

Explain how to perform spurlings test?

A

Compress head in neutral
Compress head in extension
SB head away from affected side then toward affected side and compress

25
What are OA motions? What are AA motions? What are typical C spine motions?
OA- mod type 1- (OA F/E S and R opposite) AA- rotation only- have head in flexion to lock AA joint C2-C7- mod type 2- (can be group F/E S and R same direction)
26
What is the landmark for L4? | Where are SP of lumbar spine in relation to TP?
L4- superior iliac crest | SP are in same plane as corresponding TP
27
What nerve does patellar reflex test? | What nerve does achilles reflex test?
Patellar reflex- L4 | Achilles reflex- S1
28
What nerve does ankle dorsiflexion test? What nerve does big toe dorsiflexion test? What nerve does ankle plantar flexion test?
Ankle dorsiflex- L4/L5 Big toe dorsiflex- L5 Ankle plantar flex- S1
29
Explain Hip Drop Test
Have patient standing with both feet and ground with one knee bent so weight is displaced to straight leg Measure angle of drop of iliac crest Of angle is <15º then its (+) on that hip Ex. R iliac crest drops 10º then (+) test on R hip which means you are restricted on SL and thus are SR
30
Explain Straight leg raise test/Lasegue Test
Tests sciatic nerve root Have patient supine with knee extended, medially rotated, and adducted then have them flex leg until pain begins Pain <30º- disc problem or oppo leg problem Pain 30-70º- nerve root irritation Pain >70º- low back pain secondary to muscle strain or joint problem
31
What is the definition of OM research according to AOA?
Investigator has to state relevance of proposed project to osteopathic philosophy and principles, theory, mechanisms or practice
32
What did Dr Burns research?
Induced spinal lesions to look at visceral effects | S-V reflexes
33
What did Dr Denslow research?
Studied muscle and reflexes and autonomic changes with SD- osteopathic lesions Proponent of standard terminology
34
What did Dr Korr research?
2nd great osteopathic researcher Added physiology to AT Stills anatomy Sympatheticotonio- overstimulation of symp tone Measured electrical skin resistance and changes with ANS
35
What did Dr Johnston research?
Reliability- dr should find same results Validity V-S reflexes
36
DO vs MD Spanish flu results LA County results NEJM 1999 low back pain results
Spanish flu- dec mortality from pneumonia LA county- reduced LOS and mortality Backpain- dec PT, NSAID use, and muscle relaxer use
37
``` 5 trials of OM research Pancreas? Ankle sprain? Pneumonia? Otitis media? Spleen pump? ```
Pancreas- reduced LOS Ankle sprain- reduced edema/pain and inc ROM Pneumonia- reduced LOS and antibiotic use OM- reduced episodes of AOM and number of procedures Spleen- increase immune cell count
