1 Kings 17 - 2 Kings 2: Israelite prophet who spoke against the NK during the reign of Ahab and His wife Jezebel (of Tyre) and their son Ahaziah; Brought draught on Samaria, ending with his confrontation w/ Prophets of Baal on mount Carmel; performed miracles; taken up into heaven in a chariot of fire. A paradigm for the NT - calling people to repentance before the day of the Lord.

1 Kings 19 - 2 Kings 13: Prophet of the NK. Servant and successor to Elijah; performed miracles primarily among the people of Israel and Judah, as well as some with foreigners - a paradigm seen in Jesus. Occasionally spoke into the monarchy.

Hezekiah

2 Kings 16 - 20: A primarily good king who reigns in Judah when Samaria falls to Assyria. Withstands an Assyrian attack on Judah by praying to the Lord and seeing the Lord defeat Sennacherib’s army.

Josiah

A

2 Kings 22-23 A good king of Judah who rediscovers the Law and implements kingdom wide reforms as a result: repairing the temple, reinstituting proper temple worship, reinstituting the Passover. Unfortunately, his father was so evil, that God had already delivered Judah over to defeat.

Jeremiah

A

Jeremiah: 7th-6th century prophet to the Southern Kingdom from Josiah’s reforms through exile. He spoke warning to the Kings of Judah and was not listened to. Wrote to the exiles for how they should live in exile. Prophesied the new covenant.

Ezekiel

A

Ezekiel: A Jerusalemite prophet of the Southern kingdom while in exile; from a priestly line. Exiled with the second deportation in 597. Much of his prophecy was in acted sermons of warning. Urging the post-exilic people to understand how they can be faithful in their second-chance living in the land. Also prophesied the New Covenant.

Daniel

A

Daniel: Prophet of the Lord and deported Judahite living in Babylon during the reigns the Babylonian and Persian empires. Exemplar of faithfulness in exile, spoke of the coming of the Son of Man.

Nehemiah

A

Nehemiah: Jewish cupbearer to the Persian king who arranged for the return of many Jewish people to Jerusalem with supplies to rebuild it’s walls. He led the people in rebuilding the walls of the city and defending it. He charged the people to follow the Lord, then rebuked them when they ruled without mercy.

Malachi

A

Malachi: Prophet to the post-exilic people who’s excitement had worn off after their return to the land. He calls the people to repentance and covenant faithfulness through the use of a diatribe. Warned that God would send Elijah as the messenger of the Day of the Lord - Jesus identifies this Elijah as John the Baptist.
