Q

How does the digital revolution play a role in gig economy?

A

Most workers within the digital economy are legally self-employed. The gig economy is for a large part enabled by digital technology, for example by using apps. The gig economy as we know it now would not exist on this scale would it not have been for digital technology. For a lot of providers it is not possible to use the service without using the app (for instance: Uber).

Q

**What are the arguments of anti-globalists?

A
  1. We see benefits such as free flow of knowledge, capital, goods and technology
  2. Increased inequality because of the flow of wealth from mostly poor countries to rich countries.
  3. The Western Capitalist countries profit most.
Stiglitz attributes this to power imbalances (see below)

Q

According to Stiglitz, how can we explain the imbalances in wealth gained from globalization?

A

Because globalization doesn’t happen in vacuum, already pre-existing power imbalances lead to some countries benefitting more than others.
The most profiting countries are the Western ones.

Describe the principle-agent problem

A

The principle agent problem arises when one party (agent) agrees to work in favor of another party (principle) in return for some incentives. Such an agreement may incur huge costs for the agent, thereby leading to the problems of moral hazard and conflict of interest.
