What is dramatic irony?
the audience knows something the characters don’t
What is staging?
how the stage is set up
What is a stage direction?
directions for the characters when performing
What is tone?
the way something is said e.g. happy/sad
What is a climax?
peak of the play e.g. the main event
What are props?
items/objects used on stage
What is denouement?
the ending of the play
What is dialogue?
speech between characters
What is foreshadowing?
a hint/warning of something in the future in the play
What is an aside?
an off-comment to the audience
What is a soliloquy?
a ‘monologue’ (similar to an aside but longer)
What are tragic conventions?
- suffering & destruction
- the fall of an eminent person
- the tragic hero possesses a fatal flaw leading to their downfall
- the hero realises what is causing their suffering
- cathartic for the audience
What is hamartia?
the hero’s flaw/link between his preceding behaviour and his downfall
What is peripeteia?
the turning point in the plot, the point of no return
What is anagnorisis?
when the protagonists undergo a process of recognition see their own nature & destiny more clearly than before
What is a tragic structure?
exposition - rising action - climax - falling action - denouement - conclusion
