What were some of the things that led to the fall of the Aritcles of Confederation and rise of the constitution?

(what was going wrong?)

  • national govt couldn’t enforce taxes, and states were not making up for their war debt properly
  • Shay’s Rebellion
  • fighting between Americans and Indians on the western frontier & national govt couldn’t create an army to protect the Americans on the frontier from the indians
  • economic crisis - national govt couldn’t control or regulate commerce/trade

  • more women were wanting to be represented in the government; they wanted a voice; wanted a vote
  • NJ gave women the right to vote, but then soon repealed the law in 1807
  • more women had new rights to own property after the revolution

what were the plans that led to the development of the Great Compromise?

  • Virginia Plan (by James Madison): Congress should have proportional representatives to each state
  • NJ Plan: equal # of reps in congress for each state
  • Connecticut Plan (THE GREAT COMPROMISE): congress should be split into the following two sections
  • House of Representatives: population based representation
  • Senate: equal reps for each state

  • they also decided that congress could eliminate the slave trade starting 1808
