Acute Otitis Media: Assessment Findings
General
Recent history of upper respiratory infection
Fever (may be high in infants and young children)
Irritability, crying, inconsolability
Loss of appetite
Lethargy or difficulty sleeping
Tugging or pulling at the affected ear (common in infants)
Determining Intake, oz, cup, ml
1 cup = 240mL, 1oz = 30mL
Safe Administration of Medication: Discharge Teaching About an Antibiotic Prescription
Complete the entire prescribed course of antibiotics even if symptoms improve
Do not skip doses. If a dose is missed, give it as soon as possible, but do not double up
Notify the provider if the child develops severe diarrhea, rash, or signs of an allergic reaction

Treat patient with EPIPEN based on child’s weight
IM injection to anterior lateral thigh; some may require repeat doses
Give oxygen
