Why is democRacy instrumentally valuable?
Because it creates good decisions which take into account the views of all citizens
Why is democracy paradoxical
Because I can think one candidate is right for the job, when another candidate is elected I can think they are right for the job because they have been legitimately elected by my fellow citizens
Why did John Stuart Mill argue democracy was good for citizens
As it increases their moral reasoning and their intellect
Who argued there was a paradox at the core of democracy
Richard Wollheim
What does Swift think the democratic paradox shows
That it is two different judgements about what is right and what is legitimate
It shows there can be a decision which is made legitimate through procedures and be morally valued without being the correct decision
Instead of believing there are no right and wrong answers what must democrats believe
That all citizens view are equally important and should feed into the democratic process wether they are right or wrong
Even if there is a right answer what is more valuable
Procedures that are less likely to produce it but see the views of all citizens as important
Why is democracy intrinsically valuable
Because of its procedural value, it values equality, fairness and autonomy
