Q

Describe technology strategies- CAD

A

Computer-aided design (CAD) is a type of computer system that is used to create, modify and optimise a product design.

It assists in speeding up the product design process while increasing its accuracy. While being costly to introduce CAD, it saves a business both time and money in the long term, thereby increasing the productivity of the designer and improving quality of design work.

Q

Just In Time (JIT)

A

is an inventory management system that aims to avoid holding any stocks (either as inputs or finished goods). Supplies arrive just as they are need for production. JIT aims to reduce costs through minimising the amount of inventory that must be held at any one time.

Advantages:

  • lower costs of storing raw materials as it would order only when a customer places order.
  • insurance costs reduced as there is less inventory.

Disadvantages:
- increase in delivery costs

Q

Quality Control (QC)

A

Involves the use of inspections at various points in the production process to check for problems and defects.
For example, smiths snack food issued recall on salt and vinegar chips after some packs were found to have pieces of rubber in them.

-once defects have been detected, operations management will decide whether production needs to be halted to fix the cause of the problem or it was just a one-off case.
