Other forms of Inheritance Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is incomplete dominance?
Neither allele is completely dominant, leading to a blended trait.
Example: Red (R) + White (r) = Pink (Rr) in flowers.
What is an example of incomplete dominance in humans?
Wavy hair (from a straight-haired and curly-haired parent).
What is co-dominance?
Both alleles are expressed equally.
Example: A red (R) and white (W) flower produces red-and-white-spotted flowers.
What is an example of co-dominance in animals?
Roan cows (red-and-white fur pattern).
What are sex-linked traits?
Traits controlled by genes on the X and Y chromosomes.
Example: Color blindness.
Why are males more likely to inherit sex-linked diseases?
Males have only one X chromosome, so they only need one recessive allele to express the trait.
What is a carrier?
A person who has one recessive allele for a trait but does not express it.
Example: XCX for color blindness.
Can two carriers have affected offspring?
Yes, if both pass on the recessive allele.
