Other specialised cells Flashcards

What is epithelium tissue?
The lining tissue, and is found on the outside and inside of your body.
Give an example of epithelial tissue
Skin, walls of alveoli, lining of intestines
How is epithelial tissue adapted to its function?
Arrangement of epithelial cells depend on its function:
- Squamous epithelium is thin which makes it ideal for the exchange of materials such as in the alveoli.
- Ciliated epithelium has hair like structures attached to it, which makes it useful for moving particles out of our body.
What is connective tissue?
It has an important structural role and is necessary to hold tissues together in the body
What is connective tissue composed of, and how does this aid its function?
- Consists of a non living extracellular matrix containing proteins and polysaccharides; which separates the living cells within the tissue so it can hold tissues together
Give 3 examples of connective tissue
- Cartilage = coats the end of a bone
- Ligaments = connect bone to bone
- Tendon = connect muscle to bone
State 3 types of cartilage and describe what they do.
- Hyaline - forms the embryonic skeleton and covers the ends of long bones
- Fibrous - found in discs between the vertebrae and in the knee joint
- Elastic - makes up the outer ear and epiglottis
