Extended Metaphor
Used all the way through- creating vivid, memorable comparisons that allow for a deeper understanding of complex ideas or emotions.
In media res
In the middle of something- by immediately engaging them with the narrative’s central conflict or a pivotal moment. This immediate engagement creates intrigue and curiosity
Juxtaposition
A deliberate contrast- Writers use it to engage readers, emphasize points through contrast, and build connections via comparison.
Motif
A typical object/image/idea- Motifs are symbolic, and writers use them to help readers understand the theme of a story.
They can add depth to a story. Symbolism refers to the use of something concrete to represent something abstract.
Anti-Climax
Tension leading to nothing - An anticlimax, a sudden drop in tension or excitement, can surprisingly engage readers.
By subverting their expectations, it can spark curiosity, humor, or even a deeper emotional response.
Caesura
Pauses for effect- disrupts the expected flow of the poem, drawing attention to the pause and the surrounding words.
leads to deeper emotional resonance and a more dynamic reading experience.
