Q

What is an Otoacoustic emission?

A

Produces a controlled acoustic signal in the ear canal and measures the resulting evoked emission that is generated by outer hair cells in the cochlea.

Q

What is DPOAEs?

A

Distortion production OAE → test of auditory function for all ages
Frequencies 500hz-1000 hz

Q

What is TEOAEs?

A

Transcient evoked OAE: abrupt click or burst activates the cochlea across a wide frequency region

Q

How to perform the otoacoustic emission test?

A
  • Great seal
  • Can’t touch for a minute
  • Really quiet environment
  • Don’t wiggle or it will pick up muscles artifact

Q

Who do we test with OAEs

A
  • Neonatal hearing screening: prior to hospital discharge
  • Hearing screenings: preschool
  • Differential diagnosis: malingerers
  • Monitoring cochlear damage: ototoxic medications
  • Special needs

Q

Auditory Neuropathy?

A

Child/parent will complain of abnormal hearing ability, but they will pass the OAE, but the ABR will be abnormal, but a hearing testing might be normal or show a mild loss, speech discrimination can be reduced
