Form vs Function
-Form= type of task (gardening), Function=purpose serve, Meaning
client factors
-Values, Beliefs, Spirituality (physiological functions of the body system (mental functions, eg attention memory, hearing)
-Body functions (muscle strength, coordination)
-Body structure (eyeballs, bones, anatomy)
Occupations
-Everyday activities that bring meaning and purpose to life.
-Include what people need, want, and are expected to do.
-Categories: (ADLs or IADLs), health management, rest/sleep, education, work, play, leisure, and social participation.
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
Activities oriented toward taking care of one’s own body and completed on a routine basis (adapted from Rogers & Holm, 1994)
*Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs)
Activities to support daily life within the home and community.
Health Management
Activities related to developing, managing, and maintaining health and wellness routines, including self-management, with the goal of improving or maintaining health to support participation in other occupations.(medication/ condition management, physical activity)
Examples of ADL’s Occupations
Selfcare
-Bathing, showering,
-toileting, personal hygiene, grooming
dressing
-eating, swallowing, -functional mobility
-sexual activity.
Examples of IADL’s Occupations:
-Care of pets/animals, child rearing (providing care and support for child’s.
-developmental/ physiological needs),
-communication management,
-driving,
-community mobility,
-financial management (bills)
-meal prep,
-religious/spiritual expression, safety, and shopping.
Examples of Health Management Occupations:
-Social/emotional health and maintenance,
-symptom/conditions management,
-medication management
-physical activity, nutrition management, personal care
-device management (hearing aids, glasses, orthotics, prosthetics, adaptive equipment)
Rest and Sleep
Activities related to obtaining restorative rest and sleep to support healthy, active engagement in other occupations. (ex: rest, sleep preparation)
Education
Activities needed for learning and participating in the educational environment.
Work
Labor related to the development, production, delivery, or management of objects or services; benefits may be financial or non-financial (e.g., social connectedness, contributions to society, structure and routine to daily life)
Play
Activities that are intrinsically motivated, internally controlled, and freely chosen (suspension of reality (e.g., fantasy, exploration, humor, risk taking, contests, and celebrations)
-Play is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon that is shaped by sociocultural factors. (play exploration or play participation)
Leisure
committed to obligatory occupations such as work, self-care, or “Nonobligatory activity that is intrinsically motivated and engaged in during discretionary time.
-Identify interests, skills, and opportunities
-Plan and participate activities, balancing them with other occupations.
-Obtain, use, and maintain equipment and supplies for leisure.
Social Participation
Activities that involve social interaction with others, including family, friends, peers, and community members, and that support social interdependence.
