Outcome 3 Flashcards
(23 cards)
General signs of ill health in fish.
- Lethargy
- Off feed
- Isolation from group
- Changes in colour
What is fin rot.
Bacterial infection caused by poor tank hygiene/diet.
How to treat fin rot?
For the environment clean tank, filter and change water.
Antibacterial treatments can be applied to affected fish which should then be isolated in hospital tank.
You can trim the infected tissue and treat with antiseptic (provodine).
What is piscine tuberculosis?
Internal parasites and ulcers. It is transmitted by infected food material.
What is the treatment for piscine tuberculosis?
Aureomycin baths are effective.
Intensive antibiotics.
What is hole in the head disease?
It is a spironucleus infection.
How is hole in the head disease treated?
Strong antibiotics and good water quality/nutrition.
What is abdominal dropsy?
It is caused by bacterial organisms invading the skin or muscle tissue.
How is abdominal dropsy treated?
Suitable antibiotics.
What is white spot?
Caused by free-swimming single- celled protozoa infecting, in this case gills.
What is the treatment for white spot?
A white spot solution.
What is septicaemia?
Can be caused by bacterial or, in the case of carp, viral organism due to poor environmental conditions.
What is the treatment for septicaemia?
Isolate the infected fish.
Improve water quality.
Give suitable antibiotics.
What is fish lice?
Fish lice is caused when an infected fish gets introduced into a tank without being quarantined. It can also happen through live plants.
Treatment for fish lice?
Clean the environment.
Increasing water circulation.
Salt baths.
What is nematodes?
An intestinal roundworm. This is caused by contaminated food or new tank mates who have not been isolated.
Treatment for nematodes?
Anti-parasitic medications.
Cleaning the cage.
What is saltwater Ich?
A protozoal infection that will affect skin, gills and fins.
What is the treatment for saltwater Ich?
A copper containing treatment is most effective.
What is neon tetra disease?
A single celled protozoa.
Treatment for neon tetra disease?
There is no cure however it can be prevented with soft water and peat filtration systems.
What is fish fungi?
White cotton wool like appearance that appears on skin, fins or eyes of either dead or live fish. More common in fish already weakened by other problems.
Treatment of fish fungi?
Tank cleansing and treatment of fish with baths of cooking salt.
