What are the congenital malformations of the pinna and external ear canal
you are born with 6-7 bronchial arches and the first two will fuse together and become the first pharyngeal pouch. If anything goes wrong during development it will cause a malformation which will give you problems in the outer and middle ear but that doesn’t mean the inner ear is affected.
Maldevelopment of the first pharyngeal pouch is?
middle and outer ear.
_______ and _________ develop independently with the outer and middle ear
cochlea and inner ear
________ or _________ ear hearing loss doesn’t mean there is a problem in the inner ear. (it can happen but it is rare.)
outer or middle ear
As long as ____________ are in contact then that person can still hear
hair cells
_______ ear problems result in conductive hearing loss (never sensorineural)
outer
a small or deformed pinna is called
microtia
_________ usually doesn’t result in a hearing loss because the signal will eventually get there.
Microtia
________ can go around corners so as long as there is a pathway for the sound wave to hit the ear drum then you should be alright.
sound waves
_______ is the absence of the pinna
anotia
with _______ while you may get some change in resonance the signal will eventually get there. (will not cause significant hearing loss)
anotia
_______ closure of the external auditory meatus. There is no ear canal so there is a CHL
atresia
______ narrowing of the canal. Doesn’t impede hearing but could give a CHL
stenosis
__________ cartilage flattens and blocks the canal because of that. CHL
collapsed canal
Anotia, atresia, stenosis and collapsed canal are all treated with ________
otoplasty
Presence of foreign bodies/impacted cerumen will result in ?
probably no HL unless canal is obstructed
A tumor (cholesteatoma) benign or malignant
probably no HL unless canal is obstructed
External otitis is known as
swimmers ear
