Q

Explain how many immigrants experiences contrasted with their expectations about living in the United States

A
  • Immigrants expected jobs, freedom and a better life upon arriving in America. They thought the “Roads were paved with gold.”
  • In reality, there were millions of industrial jobs for the Immigrants, but they had to work very long hours, for very low pay, in unsafe conditions.
  • Immigrants often faced prejudice & discrimination because the Americans feared different cultures being brought into their country, & were afraid of economic competition.
  • For example, Immigrants could easily replace American workers for lower pay in the industrial jobs

Q

Describe the process of acculturation, and explain how immigrants adapted their own traditions to American culture

A
  • Acculturation is when Immigrants hold onto their old traditions while adapting to a new culture.
  • At home, immigrants ate their own foods, spoke their own language, & tried to keep their traditional religions.
  • Outside the home, Immigrants used American schools, factories, & the political system.
  • An example of acculturation is; Mexican Immigrants developed a language called Chuco. Chuco was a blend of English & Spanish because the children learned English in school, so the parents would try to learn it from the children, but ended up blending the 2 languaged together
