What is the purpose of an Output Device?
To display the information.
What is a pixel?
A pixel is a bit inside your screen is showing a bit of your display. The higher the number of pixels, the better.
What is a Smart TV?
It is a Tv that can connect to the internet without streaming device or top box.
What is meant by hard copy?
A copy that is printed out. It is not saved on the internet.
Give one advantage and one disadvantage of Laser Printers:
Advantage:
High quality printouts - better than ink-jet or dot-matrix
Disadvantage:
Most expensive printer type to buy, especially colour lasers
Give one advantage and one disadvantage of Ink-Jet Printers:
Advantage:
Cheap to buy - cheaper than a laser printer
Disadvantage:
Noisier than a laser printer (but not as noisy as a dot-matrix)
What sort of task would require the use of a Plotter rather than a Laser or ink-jet printer?
Plotters are a specialist type of printer which is able to draw high quality images on very large pieces of paper, for example 3 foot wide by 10 foot long. The task is technical drawing.
Give a reason why Touch Screens are commonly used in cashpoints.
Touch screens are easy to use and are often found in public places such as cashpoints at banks, ticket collection terminals at theatres or airports, information centers at museums.
Why might a Digital Projector be used at Home?

Why would external speakers be used even though the computer had an internal one?
Everyone in the classroom can hear.
Help create a atmosphere.
When would Headphones be used even though the computer had an internal speaker?
It doesn’t annoy other people.
It can only be heard by one user.
Give a common example of a use of computer controlled lights.
It gives light on day and changes to dark mode at night.

What does the abbreviation CPU stand for?
Central processing unit.
What is the disadvantage of using higher clock speeds?
It is hard to imagine just how fast this is, but it does mean that a CPU running at this clock speed can handle a huge amount of data in a very short time. This is why you can listen to music on the computer while you are also browsing the web and doing some work.
How many cores does a Raspberry Pi 3 computer have
A modern processing device may contain two or even four CPUs. Some chip-making companies call these CPUs ‘cores’. So a dual-core device means it contains two CPUs and a quad-core contains four.
What is meant by the term ‘non-volatile’?
The key thing to remember about ROM is that the data is not erased when the computer is switched off - the data is stored permanently. This type of memory is also called ‘non volatile memory’.
Why is ROM needed in a computer?
This kind of memory is needed because the computer must be able to obtain instructions from the moment it is switched on and it must know some basic things about the hardware that makes up the machine i.e. ‘its configuration settings’.
List two things that are stored in RAM
i) As well as storing the data you are working on, RAM also stores the modules that are needed to make your applications work.
ii) RAM is also needed so that you can have multiple windows open and so that you can switch between them.
Why can installing extra RAM in a computer improve its performance?
It will help the computer to stop running slowly.
What does the abbreviation RAID stand for?
Each hard disk has a copy of all the data, so if one fails the other can carry on. This is called a RAID array.
Explain what Serial Access means.
Magnetic tape uses ‘serial access’ to find a piece of data. This means that to find a specific piece of data, the tape reader has to start at the beginning of the tape and continue fast forwarding until it gets to the piece of data that needed.
