Q

Give FIVE reasons for these choices. Think about the differences in the ways the printers will be used. Give clear explanations. Make sure you use full sentences.

A

i. They use a laser printer as they have to print a lot and in high quality.

ii. At home, you do not print a lot of copies in very high quality.

iii. At school, they need to finish printing quickly

iv. It is very silent at school

v. At school, cartridge does not need to be replaced in a short period of time

Give an example of a task for which a plotter would be the best choice for an output device. Explain what makes a plotter so suitable.

Task:
To draw high quality pictures

Explanation:
Can be used by artists.

16
Q

What is the disadvantage of using higher clock speeds?

A

It is hard to imagine just how fast this is, but it does mean that a CPU running at this clock speed can handle a huge amount of data in a very short time. This is why you can listen to music on the computer while you are also browsing the web and doing some work.

17
Q

How many cores does a Raspberry Pi 3 computer have

A

A modern processing device may contain two or even four CPUs. Some chip-making companies call these CPUs ‘cores’. So a dual-core device means it contains two CPUs and a quad-core contains four.

18
Q

What is meant by the term ‘non-volatile’?

A

The key thing to remember about ROM is that the data is not erased when the computer is switched off - the data is stored permanently. This type of memory is also called ‘non volatile memory’.

19
Q

Why is ROM needed in a computer?

A

This kind of memory is needed because the computer must be able to obtain instructions from the moment it is switched on and it must know some basic things about the hardware that makes up the machine i.e. ‘its configuration settings’.

20
Q

List two things that are stored in RAM

A

i) As well as storing the data you are working on, RAM also stores the modules that are needed to make your applications work.

ii) RAM is also needed so that you can have multiple windows open and so that you can switch between them.

21
Q

Why can installing extra RAM in a computer improve its performance?

A

It will help the computer to stop running slowly.

22
Q

What does the abbreviation RAID stand for?

A

Each hard disk has a copy of all the data, so if one fails the other can carry on. This is called a RAID array.

23
Q

Explain what Serial Access means.

A

Magnetic tape uses ‘serial access’ to find a piece of data. This means that to find a specific piece of data, the tape reader has to start at the beginning of the tape and continue fast forwarding until it gets to the piece of data that needed.

24
Q

Which type of Optical Storage Device has the greatest data capacity?

A

Blu-Ray

25
Q

Give two reasons why USB Memory Sticks are so popular.

A

i) Small and lightweight

ii) Contain a lot of data.

26
Q

Give the name of a type of Storage Device, other than a USB memory stick, has no moving parts.

A

SSD

27
Q

Give one advantage of having an NAS on a home network.

A

A NAS in the home can be used as a ‘media server’ where films and music are streamed over the network or even connected to the television by a WiFi link.

28
Q

Give two reasons why you might want to use Online Storage.

A

i)It is secure

ii)Provides back up data.
