Output Devices Flashcards
(44 cards)
What is the function of an output device?
help transfer processed data to users
What formats can output devices display?
images, sounds, videos, machine coded output
What are some examples of output devices?
printers
cutters
actuator
monitors
speakers
projectors
headphones
What is the function of printers?
creates paper (hard) copies of documents and images
Briefly, how do inkjet printers work?
utilize ink cartridges to spray tiny drops of ink at any paper to form an image
In an inkjet printer, what is a print head?
a part that consists of nozzles, which spray small drops of ink onto the paper to form different characters
In an inkjet printer, what are ink cartridges?
cartridges that each consist of a group for each colour
What are the different colours of the cartridges?
blue, yellow, magenta and black
In an inkjet printer, what is the stepper motor and belt?
a part which moves the print head assembly across the page
In what direction does the stepper motor and belt move the print head assembly?
side to side
In an inkjet printer, what is the paper feed?
a part that automatically feeds the printer with paper, as necessary
What are the two technologies used to produce ink droplets?
thermal bubble and piezoelectric
What are the benefits of buying an inkjet printer?
It is cheap
Can produce high-quality images
What is the main disadvantage of an inkjet printer?
It is slow
In a thermal bubble, what must happen so that ink droplets are produced?
Tiny resistors produce heat
Heat causes ink to vaporise
Bubble of ink is ejected from the printer head, onto the paper
When the bubble of ink collapses, a vacuum is created
This vacuum draws fresh ink from the print head
In a piezoelectric, what must happen so that ink droplets are produced?
Crystal at the back of the ink reservoir is given an electric charge
A vibration is created
This vibration forced the ink to be ejected onto the paper
What is the printing process, in an inkjet printer, in 8 steps?
- Data sent to printer driver
- Printer driver checks format
- Driver checks availability of printer
- Data sent to buffer
- Sensor checks paper feed tray
- Printer head moves from side to side and ink of four colours are sprayed in correct proportion to get desired colour
- Once line is completed, paper moves slightly to print new line
- Previous process is repeated until buffer is empty
Briefly, how does a laser printer work?
Uses laser to apply a static charge to areas on the paper. The toner is attracted to this charge and sticks to paper, forming an image
What type of ink does a laser printer use?
Powder ink
What are the advantages of buying a laser printer?
Prints whole page in one go
Carries large print job
Fast
Does not run out of ink halfway
High quality
What are the disadvantages of buying a laser printer?
Expensive
Worse colour gradation
In a laser printer, what is the printing process in around 11 steps?
- Data sent to printer driver
- Printer driver checks format
- Driver checks availability of printer
- Data sent to buffer
- Printer’s photosensitive drum gives a negative charge
- A laser beam is used to discharge areas
- Toner, fine powder are attracted to areas of drum exposed to laser
- Toner transferred from drum to paper using positive charge
- Toner is melted onto paper using heat and pressure
- Residual toner is removed from drum to prepare it for the next job
- Printed paper is outputed
What is the toner, in a laser printer?
A powdered ink
What is a 3D printer used for?
Computer aided design to produce solid objects out of several materials
