What does ELAC stand for?
Elevator Aileron Computer
FCOM/DSC/27/10/10/COMPUTERS
How many ELACs on the A320 and what do they control?
2 ELACs
They are for normal elevator and stabilizer control. And aileron control.
FCOM/DSC/27/10/10/COMPUTERS
What are the functions of the ELACs?
Normal, Alternate, Direct Pitch Normal, Direct Roll Abnormal Attitude Aileron droop Acquisition of autopilot orders
FCOM/DSC/27/20/30/OVERHEAD PANEL
Under Normal Law, what does ELAC 1 control?
Primary - Aileron control
Provides 5-degree aileron droop when flaps extended
Standby - Elevator (via BLUE hydraulic jacks) and THS (via No2 motor)
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/ROLL CONTROL & PITCH CONTROL
Under Normal Law, what does ELAC 2 control?
Primary - Elevator and horizontal stabilizer
Standby - Aileron control
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/ROLL CONTROL & PITCH CONTROL
What backs up ELAC 2?
ELAC 2 ->ELAC 1 -> SEC 2 -> SEC 1
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/PITCH CONTROL
What happens to the ELACs if all ADIRS were lost?
“We lose ELAC functions” - GACA answer
If all ADRs are lost, ELACS trigger NAV ADR DISAGREE ECAM caution.
Flight controls revert to alternate law without high or low-speed protection. The situation is latched until ELACs are reset on the ground.
The ADIRS supply information to the ELACs so some parts of the ELACs may be lost but no clear statement says the ELAC functions are lost.
FCTM/PR/AEP/NAV/UNRELIABLE AIRSPEED INDICATIONS
What does SEC stand for?
Spoilers Elevator Computer
FCOM/DSC/27/10/10/COMPUTERS
How many SECs are installed on the A320 and what do they control?
3 SECs
They control the spoilers are standby elevator and stabilizer control.
FCOM/DSC/27/10/10/COMPUTERS
What functions are performed by the SECs?
Alternate, Direct Pitch (SEC 1 &2 only)
Normal, Direct Roll
Abnormal attitude
Speed brakes and ground spoilers
FCOM/DSC/27/20/30/OVERHEAD PANEL
Under Normal Law, what do the 3 SECs control?
Primary - Spoiler control (spoilers 2,3.4)
Standby - Elevator/Stabilizer control (SEC 1 &2 back up the ELACs)
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/ROLL CONTROL & PITCH CONTROL
What is the sole purpose of SEC 3?
No. 2 Spoiler control
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/ROLL CONTROL
What does FAC stand for?
Flight Augmentation Computer
FCOM/DSC/27/10/10/COMPUTERS
How many FACs are installed?
2 FACs
FCOM/DSC/27/10/10/COMPUTERS
Under Normal Law, what functions do the FACs provide?
FLY-W
Flight envelope function (PFD speed scale, min & max speed, maneuvering speeds, Alpha floor)
Low energy warning protection (“speed, speed, speed”)
Yaw function - (yaw damping, turn coordination, rudder trip, rudder limiter)
Windshear detection function
If both FAC’s fail, is rudder available?
The pilots can use conventional rudder pedals to control the rudder.
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/YAW CONTROL
If both FAC’s fail, is maximum rudder deflection available?
Yes, the rudder deflection limit stops at the last value reached. At slats extension, full rudder travel authority is recovered.
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/YAW CONTROL
What is the computer and priority for the Ailerons?
ELAC 1 -> ELAC 2
If both ELAC 1 and ELAC 2 fail, then ailerons go to damping mode
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/ROLL CONTROL
What is the computer and priority for the Elevator and Stabilizer?
ELAC 2 -> ELAC 1 -> SEC 2 -> SEC1
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/PITCH CONTROL
How are the flight control surfaces controlled and actuated?
All surfaces are controlled electrically or mechanically and actuated hydraulically.
FCOM/DSC/27/10/10/CONTROL SURFACES
When is the automatic pitch trim available?
Normal and alternate law with bank angle less than 33° with or without autopilot engaged.
FCOM/DSC/27/20/10/20/FLIGHT MODE
If the active elevator actuator fails, what occurs?
Control is transferred to the other actuator.
2 actuators. Normally the green actuator drives the 3 servo jacks. If failed, a yellow actuator remains synchronized and takes over.
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/YAW CONTROL
How is roll control normally achieved?
1 aileron and 4 spoilers on each wing (spoilers 2,3,4,5)
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/ROLL CONTROL
What items will degrade if we lose ELAC 1 and SEC 2?
Nothing, ELAC 2 and SEC 1 will back them up.
FCOM/DSC/27/10/20/PITCH CONTROL & ROLL CONTROL
