oxidation, reduction electrochemistry Flashcards
(13 cards)
Oxidation
LEO- Loss of electron is oxidation
Reduction
GER - Gain of electron is reduction
relationship between oxidation and oxidation state
oxidation state increases as oxidation increases. Meaning that as electrons are lost, oxidation state increases
oxidizing agent
it is reduced and gains electrons. it has the lower Eo
reducing agent
it is oxidized and loses electrons. it has the higher Eo
anode
where oxidation takes place
cathode
where reduction takes place
salt bridge
keeps ions in balance. it send negative ions to the anode and positive to the cathode
short hand notation for electrochemical cell
anode | solution that the anode is in || solution cathode is in | cathode
|| represents the salt bridge.
standard electrode potential
it is given in reduction using half reactions. If it is positive, it is spontaneous.
E^o cell
E cell = E cathode - E anode
DGcell
DGcell = -nFEcell
where DG = delta Gcell
n = number of moles or charges
F = faraday’s constant = 96500 C/mol e-
when DGcell < 0 then rxn is spontaneous
