oxides Flashcards
(22 cards)
basic oxides - react with acid only
CaO (calcium oxide), CuO (copper oxide), MgO (magnesium oxide), Na2O (sodium oxide)
amphoteric oxide - react with both acid n bases
lead (ll) oxide, aluminium oxide, zinc oxide
acidic oxide - react to bases only
SO2 (sulfur dioxide), SO3 (sulfur trioxide), CO2 (carbon dioxide), NO2 (nitrogen dioxide)
neutral oxide - does not react with acid and bases
H2O (water), CO (carbon monoxide), NO (nitric oxide)
what are acids?
acids are substances that dissolve in water to produce H+ ions
examples of strong acids
sulfuric acid , hydrochloric acid
examples of weak acids
vinegar , carboxylic acids
physical properties of acids
sour taste, turns moist blue litmus paper red, conducts electricity when dissolved in water
acid + metal = ?
salt + H2 (hydrogen)
acid + carbonate = ?
salt + H2O + CO2
acid + base/alkali = ?
salt + H2O
(neutralisation)
what are bases ?
bases are metal oxides or metal hydroxides that react with acids to form salt and water only.
what are alkalis?
alkalis are a special group of bases that dissolve in water to produce OH- ions.
all alkalis are bases.
what are the physical properties of bases and alkali ?
taste bitter, turns moist red litmus paper blue, conducts electricity when dissolved in water.
what is neutralisation ?
acid + base/alkali = salt + H2O
alkali + ammonium salt = ?
salt + NH3 +H2O
what can ammonia be used for ?
fertilizers

what are oxides ?
oxides are a compound of oxygen and another element
what are salts ?
salts are ionic compounds formed when a metallic ion or ammonium ion replaces one or more hydrogen ions of an acid.
