“Shatterd visage”- Ozymandias
Even a powerful human can’t control the damaging effects of time
“King of kings”- Ozymandias
Biblical reference to Timothy 6:15 criticising the church and the power of the church will crumble like the statue of Ozymandias
“Look on my works, ye mighty + despair”- Ozymandias
Irony is Ozymandias tells others to despair his statue expecting it to be immortal
Shelley uses this to show how even the greatest human achievements are eroded by nature and time especially tyrannical power
What is significant about form and structure in Ozymandias?
Form- sonnet that doesn’t rhyme reflecting how human power and structure can be destroyed, Petrarchan sonnet as he loves himself
Structure- narrator builds up an image of the statue by focusing on different parts of it ending by describing enormous desert
“My gift of a 900-year-old name”- MLD
Possessive and arrogant, proud of his family and the Duke and the Duchess title
“And I chose never to stoop”-MLD
Pride as he thinks he’s better than his wife
Believes she doesn’t need to be reminded on how to behave
“Notice Neptune though taming a seahorse thought a rarity”- MLD
Returns to the subject of his art collection, emphasising power and wealth the story is a subtle warning to visitors on how to behave
What is significant about the form in My last Duchess?
Form- dramatic monologue written in iambic pentameter reinforces of impression that the Duke is in conversation with his visitor but the rhyming couples show the Jukes desire for control but enjambment suggests he gets carried away
What is significant about the form and structure in exposure?
Form- first person plural shows how experience was shared with soldiers across war regular rhyme scheme reflects the monotonous nature of the men’s experience half rhymes which is jagged much like the men’s experience and faded energy, each stanza ends with a half line showing lack of hope
Structure- eight stanzas with no real progression reflects the war
“Ranks on shivering ranks of grey”- Exposure
No colour battlefield is cold and lifeless ,grey also the colour of German uniform describing nature enemy
“Crusted dark jewels” - Exposure
Fires offer them no warmth they look like jewels which are precious but cold
“Like a dull rumour of some other war”- Exposure
Biblical reference to Matthew 24:6, where Jesus tells us the end of the world saying “you’ll hear of war and rumours of wars”
What is a significance of form in charge of the light brigade?
Form- regular relentless rhythm makes it sound like the cavalry and the chaos of war however the occasional unrhymed lines represent the horses stumbling and the soldiers falling

Vicious sibilance shows the graphic battle
“Jaws of death, mouth of hell” charge of the light brigade
Personifies death and hell as a monster, the soldiers can’t escape from
“Cannon to the right of them, cannon to the left of them, cannon in front of them” - charge of the light brigade
Repetition reflects gunfire , the horses hoofs and how the soldiers are trapped
What is the significance of form in the prelude?
Use of blank verse and dynamic pentameter makes it sound serious and important and regular rhythm makes it sound like natural speech

metaphor of fairy boat makes the scene sound magical but noun elf has connotations to something cheeky and lustful meaning humans take advantage and are lustful of nature

Four equal stanzas to echo the care that the photographer takes over his work.use of enjambment reflects gradual revealing of a photo
