P1 Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is energy
The ability of object to do work
Explain kinetic energy
Energy possessed by a moving object
Explain chemical energy
Energy stored in the binds between atoms, eg: food, batteries , animal muscles
Explain gravitational potential
The energy an object has due to its gravitational position
Explain elastic potential
The energy an object gains when the shape is changed
Name four other types of energy stores not name
Internal
Magnetic
Nuclear
Electrostatic
When someone pushes a box, what energy store is transferred
Chemical energy(muscles) -> kinetic energy(movement of the box)
What is a mégajoule in joules
1,000,000J
What is the kinetic energy equation
1/2 x M x V^2
M= mass kg
V= velocity squared
What is the gravitational potential energy equation
MGH
m= mass
G= gravitational field strength (9.8)
H= height
Elsastic potential energy equation
1/2 x K x e^2
K= potential spring cinstant (n/m)
E=2,718 extension in meters
What is specific heat capacity
The amount of energy it takes to increase the temperature of 1KG of that material by 1 degree Celsius
Specific heat capacity of water
4200 J/KG
Equation for specific heat capacity
MC🔺0️⃣
M= mass in KG
C= specific heat capacity
Equation for power
P= E
—
T
E=2,718 energy transferred
T= time taken
What is the principle of conservation of energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
Total amount of energy in a closed system is constant
In system that isn’t closed what happens to energy when it transferred
Some of it dissipates and becomes wasted energy
Give an example of energy dissipation
Friction between moving parts of a machine leads to dissipation of energy though heat loss.
The chemical energy is transferred to kinetic energy, but some of the energy is transferred to heat as the machine heats up
Name three ways to reduce heat dissipation from houses
Cavity wall insulation
Double glazed windows
Loft insulation- felt/ fiberglass
Equation for efficiency
Useful power output
——————————
Total power input
What is non renewable energy
Energy that cannot be replaced or takes millions of years to be replaced
Give three examples of non renewable energy sources
Coal, gas, nuclear
Give three examples of renewable energy sources
Biomass, tidal and hydroelectric
