3
Q

How do you find the density of a regular object?

A

1) You must find the mass (using a weighing scale) and find the volume (using geometry)
2) You then must subsitute these measurements into the equation: Density = Mass/volume too find the density

Q

How do you find the density of an irregular object?

A

1) First you must find the mass of your object
2) Secondly you must fill a eureka can up to the sprout, allowing excess water to drain out.
3) Gently place your irregular object into the eureka can, collecting any water which falls out through the sprout in a beaker.
4) Transport the displaced water from the beaker too a meassuring cylinder to measure the volume of the water.
5) Use your now collected volume and mass to calculate the density using the equation: Density = Mass/volume.

14
Q

Why do substances not gain any temperature when changing states?

A

As all of the energy is being put into breaking the bonds between the particles too change state,

therefore no energy is being put towards the substance gaining temperature

16
Q

What is the equation for internal energy?

A

Internal energy = Kinetic energy + potential energy

17
Q

What is latent heat?

A

The energy transferred when a substance changes state

18
Q

What is the equation for specific latent heat?

A

Specific latent heat = Energy (J) / Mass (kg)

19
Q

What is gas pressure caused by?

A

Gas pressure is caused by the random collisions of particles against any surface that the gas comes into contact with

20
Q

What is the brownian motion?

A

The random (unpredictable) movement of particles in fluids as they constantly collide with other molecules

21
Q

If a sealed container is heated, explain what happens to the pressure exerted on the container?

A

When the container is heated, the gas particles inside begin to vibrate faster due to an increase in kinetic energy. This means the particles collide with the surface of the container more frequently and with more force. This results in more pressure being exerted, as the equation for pressure is force/area

22
Q

What are the 3 main assumptions in the particle model? (also known as the kinetic model)

A
  • Particles are small
  • Particles are inelastic
  • Particles are spheres
23
Q

What is specific latent heat?

A

The energy required to change 1kg of a particular substance from one state to another, without changing temperature

24
Q

What does the specific latent heat of fusion refer to?

A

The energy required for 1KG of a substance to change from a solid to a liquid

25
What does the specific latent heat of vaporisation refer to?
The energy required to change 1KG of substance from a liquid to a gas
26
For a gas kept at a constant temperature, what can you say about the volume and the pressure?
They are inversely proportional
27
For a gas kept at a constant temperature, what happens to the pressure as the volume increases?
The pressure decreases
28
For a gas kept at a constant temperature, what happens to the volume as the pressure increases?
The volume decreases
