What are SSPC-SP 1, SSPC-SP 2, and SSPC-SP 3?
These are surface preparation standards that use different methods to achieve a desired surface cleanliness. SP 1 uses solvents; SP 2 uses hand tool cleaning; and SP3 uses power tool cleaning.
What is the SSPC?
The Society for Protective Coatings. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of industrial and marine structures through the use of protective coatings. Originally known as the Steel Structures Painting Council, SSPC was founded in 1950 and has since broadened its scope to encompass various materials and coatings technologies.
What is SSPC SP10?
Also known as Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning, it is a joint standard from the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) and NACE International. It defines a surface preparation method using abrasive blasting to achieve a high level of cleanliness on steel surfaces, suitable for applying protective coatings. The standard requires the removal of all visible oil, grease, dust, dirt, mill scale, rust, coating, oxides, and other foreign matter, with a maximum of 5% visible stains or shading allowed.
