Palpation Flashcards
(15 cards)
1
Q
Palpation
A
- Means of using the hands to uncover and receive information without disrupting tissue
- Application of variable manual pressure at the surface of the body for the purpose of determining the shape, size, consistency, position, and inherent motility, of the structural condition of the tissues beneath
- Used to make medical decisions
2
Q
Active Motion
A
- motion of a joint produced voluntarily by the patient
3
Q
Passive Motion
A
- motion of a joint induced by the operator while the patient remains passive or relaxed
4
Q
Inherent Motion
A
- that spontaneous motion of every cell, organ, system, and their component units within the body
5
Q
Dominant Eye
A
- Properly helps with depth perception
- Place on the midline for diagnostic accuracy and consistency
6
Q
Somatic Dysfunction
A
- Injury (traumatic or postural)
- Reflexive (viscero-somatic, somato-somatic)
- Structural problem, articulating surfaces of the joints are changed in a position that is physiologically abnormal
- Normal range of motion is exceeded or restricted
7
Q
Osteopathic Structural Exam (OSE)
A
- The examination of a patient by an Osteopathic practitioner with emphasis on the neuromusculoskeletal system including palpatory diagnosis for somatic dysfunction within the context of total patient care
- After history and physical exam
- Red Flags are signs and symptoms that need further evaluation
8
Q
Static Evaluation
A
- No joint motion induced
- Assesses abnormal position, bony/soft tissue abnormalities, tenderness, temperature
9
Q
Dynamic Evaluation
A
- Joint motion is induced (active or passive)
- Assesses Restricted Range of Motion (ROM), pain, Crepitus (feeling of grinding, may or may not audible), joint popping or clicking (may or may not be audible)
10
Q
Structural Diagnosis
A
- Positional Diagnosis: Proper Osteopathic structural exam and manual medicine treatment are dependent upon: palpation, visual inspection, communication, knowledge of ab/normal structure, knowledge of disease
11
Q
Three Cardinal Steps of OMM***
A
- Diagnosis
- Treatment
- Rechecking
12
Q
Palpation by layers
A
- Start with soft touch, then increased pressure
- Skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, organs, ligaments/tendons, bones
- Whole hand palpation
- Finger pads, back of hand, palm of hand
13
Q
Description: TART
A
- T = Tissue Texture Abnormality (TTA), including temperature changes
- A = Asymmetry: side to side differences
- R = Restriction of motion
- T = Tenderness: pain or senstivity
- Actual order is ATTR
14
Q
Tissue Texture Abnormality (TTA)
A
- Palpable change in tissues from skin to periarticular structures that represents any combination on the following describable palpatory signs (see slide)
15
Q
Acute v. Chronic SDs
A
Time:
- Acute: immediate or short-term impairment
- Chronic: longer term impairment
Severity: variable
