What is a panic attack ?

A

Distinct period of intense fear in absence of real danger

A

Unexpected attacks
Persistent worry about having further attacks
Loss of self confidence
Development of associated agoraphobia

What would you do for someone having a panic attack ?

A

Stay with the person
Communicate that you won’t let anything happen to them
Encourage slow breathing
Allow person to express their feeling
Don’t touch or smother person
Medication - antidepressants, anti anxiety

What are some nursing interventions for phobias ?

A

Exposure therapy and response prevention-gradual facing of fear and feared situations to reduce anxiety and distress.
Systematic desensitisation -relaxation technique mixed with exposure to decease anxiety response to trigger

A

Germs –> Cleaning
Unsafe –> checking locks, gas, ovens
Something bad will halogen –> repeating
Disorder causes anxiety –> arranging, sorting
Mental rituals –> to get rid of intrusive thoughts –> calling out phrases

What is the DSM 5 criteria for OCD?

A

1) must experience obsessions, compulsions, or both
2) the above must be time consuming to a degree where they cause distress to daily life and work
3) obsessions and compulsions cannot be due to effects of a substance or medical condition
4) symptoms not better explained by another mental disorder
