Paper 1 Flashcards
(16 cards)
What’s the meaning of a weak aid
Only partially ionises
What’s the ion that makes a solution alkali
OH -
What colour does phenylthalene go from alkali to acid
Pink to colourless
What’s a compound
Something that contains 2 more elements
What’s a mixture
Non chemically bonded elements - separated through physical processes
For example filtration
Whats the result of lithium and water
Floats and fizzes before disappearing
Whats the result of sodium and water
Melts into a ball, floats and fixes before disappearing
What’s the result of potassium and water?
Melts and floats and fizzes.
Self ignites with a lilac flame
Sometimes a small explosion.
How do the elements change as you go down group 7 ?
Relative atomic mass increases
Boiling point increases - Intermolecular forces weaken
Why does diamond have a high melting point?
Each carbon atom has 4 covalent bonds attached to them therefore they’re very strong
What type of reaction is endothermic?
What type of reaction is exothermic?
Endo - Bond breaking
Exo - Bond making
Why are some metals extracted using electrolysis and some reduction with carbon in a blast furnace?
It’s cheaper to use a blast furnace, therefore you’d use it for any metals less reactive than carbon. Although you’d use electrolysis for any more reactive.
What does Panic stand for in electrolysis
Positive
Anode
Negative
Is
Cathode
Why does methane have a low boiling point?
Weak intermolecular forces
What ions are formed (by dissociation) when an acid is dissolved in water?
Hydrogen and chloride ions
What is the ionic equation for formation of water during neutralisation?
H+ (aq) + OH-(aq) > H2O
