A

permafrost makes it difficult to build on meaning roads are constructed on gravel beds to the permafrost doesn’t thaw. the pipelines are raised to stop them from freezing

svalbard is a very remote location meaning they rely on transport such as planes and ships for access.

winter temperatures can drop below -30 degrees celsius sunlight hours are limited these factors make working outside more challenging

the polar bears can be very dangerous but all people carry a gun incase of a emergency
