Paper 1 Topics (Edexcel GCSE Chemistry) Flashcards
(24 cards)
- Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
What are the 3 subatomic particles and their charges?
Proton (+1), Neutron (0), Electron (-1)
What is the mass number of an atom
The total number of protons and neutrons.
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
How are elements arranged in the modern periodic table?
By increasing atomic number
- Bonding, Structure and Properties of Matter
What are the 3 types of bonding?
Ionic, Covalent, Metallic
What is metallic bonding and what does it do?
Occurs between: Metals only
What happens:Atoms release their outer electrons, forming a “sea of delocalised electrons.”Positive metal ions are held together by the attraction to the sea of electrons.
Bond formed by: Electrostatic attraction between positive ions and delocalised electrons.
What is covalent bonding an what does it do?
Occurs between: Non-metals only
What happens:Electrons are shared between atoms. Each atom achieves a full outer shell.
Bond formed by: Shared pairs of electrons.
What is ionic bonding an what does it do?
Occurs between: Metals and non-metals
What happens:Electrons are transferred from the metal to the non-metal.The metal becomes a positive ion (cation) The non-metal becomes a negative ion (anion).
Bond formed by: Strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
What are properties of ionic compounds?
High melting points, conduct electricity when molten or dissolved.
Why do simple covalent molecules have low melting points?
Weak intermolecular forces.
- Quantitative Chemistry
What is the law of conservation of mass?
Mass is not lost or gained in a chemical reaction.
What is the empirical formula?
The simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound
What is the formula for moles?
Moles = Mass / Mr
- Chemical Changes
What is a displacement reaction?
A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive one from a compound.
What is the pH range of acids?
0-6
What is formed when an acid reacts with a base?
Salt + Water (Neutralisation)
- Electrolysis
What is electrolysis?
Breaking down a compound using electricity.
What is formed at the cathode during electrolysis of molten ionic compounds?
Metal
What is formed at the anode during electrolysis of molten ionic compounds?
Non-metal (usually gas)
