Q

who was the director for casablanca and how was he an auteur

A

Curtiz. he shaped the thematic background of the film around the refugee crisis, by adding the extras who are real refugees.
his camera movements were master class, he was very good at moving the camera into the scene and also using the camera as a tool to explore the characters, e.g. during the flashback sequence the camera pauses before Rick starts to think of Ilsa almost saying ‘do we really want to go there?’
Unified all of the disparate ideas and brought the best out of all of his cast and crew.

Q

how can ideological analysis of sound be used to understand the sound and visuals within British and American film

A

british.
fish tank
visuals: Mia is trapped within the frame she’s almost ‘boxed in’ As if she is in the fish tank.
when the 3 gens are dancing together, their staging can be used to represent the cyclical structure of poverty, and display that when Mia is gone it will be Tyla who has to fend for herself.

sound : ‘lifes a bitch and then you die, that’s why we get high, ‘cause you never know when your gonna go’ this song can be used to symbolise Mia’s discontent with her life and therefore, its almost like she is required to see what is happening outside of the essex council estate. ideological analysis can be used to understand that mia is aiming end the cycle of poverty

under the skin
visuals: the shopping mall sequence, montage editing is used to display all of the different beauty treatments that capitalism forced onto women (Adrono’s false needs) because they have created fake insecurities that only their products can fix. this is a feminist statement as the female realises what will lure men towards her but not because she is not being tricked into looking beautiful for ‘herself’ rather than being forced to comply with dom heg notions of beauty in hetero normative society (this is what Glazer wants us to question)
