Define Facultative and Obligated parasite
Facultative : an organism that lives independently of host and is occasionally pathogenic
Obligate : an organism that can’t lead an independent non - pathogenic life
Define Poliferating non - Poliferating parasites
Poliferating : parasites that have the ability to increase in number on/in the body of the person they settle on/in
Non-poliferating : parasites that don’t have the ability to increase in number in/on the host they settle on
Define Zoophilic and Anthropophillic parasites
Zoophilic : parasites that can use man/ animal as host but prefers animals
Anthropophillic : parasites that can use man/animal as host but prefers man
Define Endoparasite and Ectoparasite
Endoparasite : parasite that settles in the body of a host
Ectoparasite: Parasite that settle outside of the host’s body
Differentiate between short-term, long-term and medium-term parasites
Short-term : parasite that is independently mobile and only has contact with host for short periods of time to feed
Medium-term : parasite that settles in/on man to complete its larval stages
Long-term : parasite that, once it settles in man, it spends the rest of its life there
Differentiate between 1, 2 and 3- host parasite
1 host : uses man as a host
2 hosts : uses man + animal
3 hosts : one man + 2 animals
Define man compromised and non-man compromised parasites
Man compromised : parasite that is so dependent on man that in order to survive, it has to settle on man at one point in its cycle (specific with areas it settles on)
Non-man compromised : parasite that may occasionally settle in/on man but man isn’t an important link in their life-cycle (no preference for particular areas of the body)
Differentiate between slightly pathogenic, pathogenic and life threatening
Slightly pathogenic - causes little damage and no visible symptoms
Pathogenic : causes visible damage, not life threatening even when in large numbers
Life threatening : affects man’s health so much, it causes severe illness or deathb
