What is a family? (2x marks)
A basic unit of society which consists of a husband, wife and their children. Each of these members have their assigned roles and responsibilities
What responsibilities does a family have?
More than one answer
Raising a child from childhood till they are old enough to take care if themselves
Also expected to educate the child (culture)
Provides emotional and physical moral (talking to them, teach them ways to deal with their emotions
Ensure provisions of physical security e.g. food, clothing, shelter
They have to provide a safe home & environment for child
What is the responsibilities of a father?
Providing food, shelter and money for the family
Making important decisions
What is the responsibilities of a mother?
Preparing food and keeping the house in order
Nurturing and raising the child
Teaching child morals and values
What is the responsibilities of a child.
Obeying the parents
Assisting in preforming household chores usually in kitchen, garden, laundry etc
Living up family expectations
Getting good grades in school
What are reasons for change in the family?
Nuclear family (live with mom and dad)
Divorce
Support for single parent families
Co-habitation (live with partner without marriage)

What is traditional role?
Traditional roles- husband is the breadwinner (earns money(but use the word breadwinner in exam not money) of the family and makes important decisions while the wife is caring for children and home
(Many women now have paid jobs and many household jobs are shared by both sexes)
What is shared role?
Shared roles- each parent has a part time job or full time job
Each shares the household jobs and child-care
What is role reversal?
Role reversal- when the mother is the breadwinner and the father stays at home looking after the home and children
What are the aspects of culture?
Religion Traditions Family size Language Hygiene Food etc
What can parents do to help develop the child socially?
- mother and toddler groups
- sign their kids up to clubs
- teach them good manners
- help them share their toys
- make them listen to other people
How can the parents help in the kids physical development?
- make them a balanced diet
- toilet training
- exercise
- bed routine
What does the word Intellectual mean?
Mind and learning
How do parents help the intellectual development of a child?
- read them books
- help with vocabulary
- play music
- ask them questions

- make achievements that can make a child feel special
- make opportunities to bond

How do grandparents help in a child’s social development?
- teach them how to talk to adults
