High lexical intensity-Emotional words like ‘horrific,stormed’
Low lexical intensity- Neutral words that lack emotion like ‘nice,bad’
What is semantics?
The meaning of words
What is denoting and connoting in relation to semantics?
Denoting- literal meaning
Connoting- associated meaning
What is phonology and what techniques are linked to it?
The sound of words- alliteration, assonance and repitition
What is vocabulary linked to grammar?
Sentence moods, types, parellism- repetition of same grammatical form
What is syntax?
How a sentence is formed- active voice/passive voice
What are aspects of graphology?
Layout elements like headings and fonts
What are pragmatics?
The who, what, why, when, how a text was produced. The reader’s situation and expectations
What is the Speech Act Theory and who developed it?
Austin- using language while also performing an action
What is the Speech Act Categorisation and who developed it?
Searle- the achieved meanings like assertive, declaratory, directive and expressive points
What is the Face Theory and who developed it?
Goffman- face is the concept of self image and how we present ourselves through language
What is a positive and negative face?
Positive face- desire to be liked
Negative face- desire to protect personal rights

Insults, ridicule, belittling, questioning, leading questions

What are Grice’s maxims?
Quality, quantity, relevance and manner
What does it mean to flout a maxim?
Ignore
What does it mean to violate a maxim?
Using it wrongfully without someone knowing like telling a lie
What is an adjacency pair?
A moment in turn taking where one utterance controls the response in some way like a question leading to an answer
What is back channelling?
The process of giving feedback through encouragement like noises or positive comments when someone is speaking
What are binomial expressions?
Sayings that are naturally pairs like ‘sit and listen’
What is code switching?
The ability of a speaker to alter the register or clarity of their speech to fit a social situation
What are conversational cues?
Paralinguistic and verbal signals that indicate turn taking should take place, a conversation is due to end or begin
What is conversational implicature?
A statement has an intended effect other than surface meaning like stating its cold, intending for someone to shut the window
