Locutionary Act- saying something with a semantic meaning in a traditional sense Illocutionary Act- performance of an act in saying something. The illocutionary force is the speakers intent like to warn, to inform, to command Perlocutionary Act- speech acts that have an effect on the feelings, thoughts or actions of a speaker or listener like persuading, inspiring

Serle outlined the five as- 1)Assertives- statements that aim to describe a state of affairs to be judged as true or false 2)Directives- statements to make another persons actions fit the content of the utterance 3)Commissives- statements that commit the speaker to a course or action 4)Expressives- statements that express the sincerity condition of the speech act 5)Declaratives- statements that attempt to change the world by representing it as having been changed
