Part 1 Flashcards
Study part 1 of the ICAO test (66 cards)
- Why is the use of ICAO phraseology important?
From what I can say, standard phraseology is important because it reduces the risk of misunderstandings and language barriers during international flights. In addition, it helps prevent runway incursions, mid-air collisions, and incidents during ground operations.
For these reasons, I believe ICAO phraseology is essential for aviation safety.
How do pilots learn to use standard phraseology in english?
I would say that pilots learn to use standard phraseology in English through radio communication training, aviation guides, and real-life practice. They study standard phraseology from ICAO manuals, attend communication courses, and practice with air traffic controllers during flights.
These methods help improve their proficiency and ensure clear and effective communication in aviation.
How did you become interested in aviation?
As far as I remember, my interest in aviation began when I was a child. A few years later, I started studying at an aviation university and became a pilot. Today, I work as an operational support assistant at Gol Airlines.
Have you ever considered changing careers?
No, I haven’t considered changing my career because I have always loved aviation. My dream is to become an airline pilot, and I am fully committed to achieving it.
When should a pilot perform a missed approach procedure?
A pilot should initiate a missed approach whenever flight safety is compromised. This could be due to an unstable approach, windshear, microburst, runway incursion, landing gear failure, a master warning, or even instructions from air traffic control.
How does a pilot prepare for a go-around procedure?
To perform a go-around, a pilot follows these steps:
First, apply full thrust;
Second, increase the pitch to a safe climb attitude;
After that, retract the landing gear and flaps as required;
Finally, contact air traffic control to inform them of the situation and request further instructions.
In your opinion, what makes a briefing effective?
In my opinion, an effective briefing should include all flight documents, a review of the flight plan, a check of NOTAMs and weather conditions at the destination, en route, and at the alternate airport. Finally, it should cover all the specific details of the operation.
Please tell me what you do inside the aircraft before a flight.
From what I can say, Before the flight, I arrive at the airport about two hours early. I gather all the necessary flight documents, create the flight plan, and check the weather conditions. Then, I go to the aircraft and perform a walk-around inspection, checking the aircraft’s structure as well as the fuel and oil levels. Finally, once inside the aircraft, I verify that all instruments are working correctly and prepare the cockpit for the flight.
What was the most difficult situation you have had in a flight?
From what I can remember, the most difficult situation I experienced was during a round trip. While at cruise altitude, the weather suddenly changed, and visibility became very restricted. I immediately contacted air traffic control to report the situation, request a descent to maintain ground visibility, and to return to the origin airport. In the end, I managed to land safely.
Do you think you acted in the best way you could?
At that moment, I did what I could. With visibility extremely restricted, I had to descend quickly to maintain ground reference and land safely. Given the situation, I believe I acted in the best way possible.
Could you describe the airport you operate at the most?
The airport I operated at the most was Caruaru Airport in Pernambuco. It has a long, paved runway and is a non-towered airport. Communication is done air-to-aiAnswer: There are some regional airplanes and flight schools operating there. It has a small terminal, which is used by Azul Linhas Aéreas. It’s a very calm airport but very important for the region.
Tell me about your experience at that airport.
So, I did my flight training at this airport. I got my private pilot license, flew my first solo flight, and did my commercial training there. It was a good place to learn because it was calm and had good facilities.
Let’s talk about takeoff. What is the difference between V1 and V2?
based on my knowledge. V1 is the maximum speed to reject a takeoff in case of any problem during the roll. On the other hand, V2 is the takeoff safety speed in case of an engine failure after V1. V2 is very important because it provides a good climb rate avoiding obstacles, for this reason the pilots must know their current V2 speed.
Why can’t pilots abort takeoff after the airplane reaches V1?
As far as I know, the pilots can’t reject takeoff after V1 because there wouldn’t be enough runway to stop safely. Reject takeoff beyond this speed could result in a runway overrun, structural damage, or even injuries to passengers.
How was your first flight as a pilot?
I consider my first flight as a pilot to be my first solo flight because that was the moment I had full control of the aircraft. I was able to take off and land by myself, and at that moment, I truly felt like a pilot.
How did you feel after your first flight?
From what I remember, after landing and taxiing back to the hangar, I truly felt like a pilot for the first time. It was an unforgettable experience. My flight instructor guided me through some maneuvers and assisted during landing. To this day, I still remember every detail.
What kind of avionics do you think aircraft will be equipped with in the future?
As far as I can say, future aircraft will be equipped with advanced touchscreen displays, allowing pilots to monitor and control all parameters more efficiently. Communication will rely more on datalink systems, reducing misunderstandings and enhancing flight safety. That ‘s my opinion.
Do you think first officers will be working from the ground in the future? Why(not)?)
I don’t think so. In the future, aircraft will still require two pilots in the cockpit because flying is a complex task. However, pilots will act more like managers, monitoring flight parameters, logging data, and handling any issues or emergencies that may arise.
Why do pilots need to take medical exams?
Pilots need to take medical exams because they are required to obtain a medical certificate, which is essential for ensuring they are fit to fly and meet aviation safety standards.
What does a pilot’s medical exam consist of?
A pilot’s medical exam includes various tests such as blood tests, vision and eye exams, hearing assessments, cardiovascular evaluations, and psychological assessments to ensure they are physically and mentally fit to fly.
In your opinion, what will communications between pilots and air traffic controllers be like in ten years?
In my opinion, with advancements in technology, pilot and air traffic control communications will rely more on DATALINK systems in the future. This will allow pilots to send and receive written messages, reducing misunderstandings, radio congestion and accent problems, making aviation safeAnswer:
Do you think all air traffic control communications in Brazil should be in English? Why? Why not?)
I don’t think so, because some pilots flying in regional airports don’t have much infrastructure, on the other hand, when the pilots are flying to international airports, I think they need to.
What advice did your instructor give you before your first check ride?
From what I remember, my flight instructor gave me some key advice before my first check ride. He told me to stay calm, follow all standard procedures, arrive at the airport early to plan the flight carefully, and remember that this flight would be just like any otheAnswer:
How did you feel [on your first check ride]?
From what I remember, I was very nervous because it was such an important moment—my dream was coming true. My check pilot gave me some recommendations and explained how the flight would go, which helped me stay calm. In the end, we had a good flight, and I was receiving my approval.
