Policy Debate
a two-on-two debate that focuses on some governing body (usually a National or State government) passing, amending, or abolishing some sort of legislation
Resolution
the statement that’s being debated. Always written as a statement, starting with the phrase “Resolved: That.”
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
a one-on-one debate that places emphasizes logic, ethical values, and philosophy. Sometimes called value debate.
Affirmative
in a debate, the side which agrees with the resolution and tries to persuade the audience and judges that the resolution should be accepted
Negative
in a debate, the side which disagrees with the resolution, and argues against its acceptance by the audience and judges
Claim
a statement made by one side that needs proof to be accepted
Reasoning
the explanation for why the proof supports the claim
Proof
actual evidence used to support a claim
