Health and wellbeing
A person’s physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual state relating to how they feel about their lives in relation to these dimensions
Health Adjusted Life Expectancy (HALE’s)
A measure of burden of disease based on the number of years in full health that a person can expect to live, based on current rates of ill health and mortality.
Emotional health and wellbeing
The ability to recognize, understand and effectively manage emotions. as well as the ability to display resilience.
Social health and wellbeing
Being able to interact with others and participate in the community in both an independent and cooperative way.
Mental health and wellbeing
is the current state of well-being relating to the mind or brain, it relates to the ability to think and process information. optimal health and enables an individual to positively form opinions, make decisions and use logic.
Physical health and wellbeing
Relates to the functioning of the body and its systems, it includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities and task
Spiritual health and wellbeing
relates to beliefs, values and ethics. that influence the way people live, this can also be
influenced by an individual’s connection to themselves, and beyond.
Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs)
A measure of burden of disease, one DALY equals one year of healthy life lost due to premature death and time lived with illness, disease or injury, combining YLL+YLD to form an answer
YLL
A measure of how many years of expected life are lost due to premature death
YLD
A measure of how many healthy years of life are lost due to illness, injury or disability
Health status
An individual’s or population’s overall level of health, taking into account various factors such as life expectancy, amount of disability, and levels of disease risk factors.
Self-assessed health status
is a status based on an individual’s own perception of their health,
burden of Disease
Is a measures the gap between current health status and an ideal situation where everyone lives to an old age free of disease and injuries.
Life expectancy
An indication of how long a person can expect to live, and the number of years of life remaining for person at a particular age if death rates do not change.
Mortality
Mortality rate refers to how many deaths occurred in a population in a given period of time for a specific case/all causes.
Morbidity
Refers to ill-health in an individual and the levels of ill-health in a population or group at a given period of time, it is measured through incidence and prevalence.
Incidence
The number of new cases of an illness or event during a given period.
Prevalence
The number of cases of a particular disease or condition present in a population at a given time
Rate of hospitalization
the state of being confined to a hospital to receive medical treatment of some kind. it occurs as a result of requiring medical care, treatment and emergency care
Core activity limitation
When an individual has difficulty, or requires assistance with any of the three core activities
what are the Core activity
- Self Care- bathing, eating etc.
- Mobility- moving around the home, away from home, getting out of bed etc.
- Communication in own language- understanding and being understood by strangers.
Psychological distress
Relates to unpleasant feelings and emotions that have an impact on an individual’s level of functioning. measured through K10
