Part 1: Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
(31 cards)
What is the difference between respiration and breathing? (2)
- Breathing is a mechanical process.
- Respiration is a chemical reaction that takes place inside cells to release energy from food.
What does ‘aerobic’ mean?
Using oxygen/ with oxygen
Energy is released from glucose…
…by a process known as respiration.
During respiration, chemical reactions take place…
…inside the mitochondria in the cells of your body.
When glucose reacts with oxygen…
… energy is released.
Carbon dioxide and water…
… are formed as waste products.
The process is known as aerobic respiration…
… because it uses oxygen from the air.
Explain whether or not plants respire. (2)
- Yes because they are organisms
- They need energy for metabolic processes, such as respiration and active transport.
When and where does aerobic respiration take place? (2)
- All of the time
- In every cell and in the mitochondria of the cell.
Substrates used in aerobic respiration: (2)
- Glucose
- Oxygen
What is the energy that is released from aerobic respiration used for?
Making new proteins (from amino acids)
What happens when aerobic respiration takes place faster? (2)
- Releases more heat
- More activity in the cell due to increased kinetic energy.
What else is required for aerobic respiration?
Enzymes
In which structure in the cell does aerobic respiration take place?
The mitochondria
Describe the mitochondria. (4)
- Highly folded inner membrane which provides a large surface area for enzymes involved in aerobic respiration.
- Tiny, rod shaped organelles
- Found in animal, plant, fungal and algal cells
- The more active a cell, the more mitochondria it will contain.
Explain why a muscle cell has more mitochondria than a fat cell. (2)
- The more active a cell is the greater its energy requirement, so the more mitochondria it needs.
- Muscle cells are more active than fat cells.
State the word equation for aerobic respiration.
Glucose + oxygen —-> carbon dioxide + water vapour (releases energy)
How much energy does aerobic respiration release?
A lot more energy than anaerobic respiration (it is an exothermic reaction)
Explain why aerobic respiration is a slower process than anaerobic respiration.
It is a longer process with many more steps (and therefore requires more enzymes).
When does anaerobic respiration take place?
When there is insufficient oxygen, or no oxygen at all so the oxidation of glucose is incomplete.
State the substrate used in anaerobic respiration.
Glucose
In which structure in the cell does anaerobic respiration take place?
The cytoplasm
Why do red blood cells use anaerobic respiration?
They have no mitochondria
State the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals.
Glucose → lactic acid (releases energy)
