bio topic 3 - page 1 of 1
Communicable diseases and pathogeons
• communicable diseases - spread by pathogens
• pathogens - micro-organisms that cause infectious disease
• pathogens include bacteria
virus
Bacteria
• some may cause food poisoning
• bacteria make us ill by . 1 entering inside the human body
• 2 bacteria reproduce rapidly
because of the body’s ideal conditions.
they can reproduce every 20 mins
•3 bacteria releases toxins
which damage tissue and makes us feel ill
Virus
• cannot reproduce by themselves
can only reproduce inside a host cell
• viruses make us ill by. 1 virus invade the host cell
•2 virus now reproduces inside the host cell
which is damaging to the
cell
as when the virus leaves the cell it can cause the cell to burst open
and die
Spread of pathogens:
• some pathogens are spread in the air e.g water droplets
• some are spread directly in water
• some are spread by direct contact between individuals
Reducing the spread of pathogens
• 1: )practicing basic hygiene - e.g washing hand before eating
