Particle Nature Of Matter, Elements & Compounds Flashcards
(5 cards)
What are the characteristics of solids?
Particles are tightly packed together in a regular arrangement and vibrate in place, so solids have a fixed shape and volume.
What are the characteristics of liquids?
Particles are close together but can move around and slide past each other, so liquids can take the shape of their container but have a fixed volume.
What are the characteristics of gases?
Particles are far apart and move randomly, so gases can take the shape and volume of their container.
What is an element?
An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom, like gold or oxygen.
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance formed when two or more elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio.
