Particles Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is the arrangement and movement of solid particles
They are arranged in a fixed position always touching their neighbours and vibrate together.
What is the arrangement and movement of liquid particles.
They are arranged randomly but always touch their neighbours. They move freely and slide off each other
What is the arrangement and movement of gas particles
They are arranged randomly and never touch their neighbours. They bounce off each other.
What are particles
They are tiny pieces that materials are made from
What are the 3 states of matter
Solid, liquid and gas
Which of the 3 states of matter can be compressed
Gas
Which of the 3 states of matter can flow
Liquid and gas
Which of the 3 states of matter has a fixed shape
Solid
Which of the 3 states of matter occupy a volume
Liquid and solid
What is a property of a substance or material
It describes the appearance and how it behaves.
What is melting
The stage when solid turns to liquid
What is freezing
The stage when liquid turns to solid
What is boiling/evaporating
The stage when liquid turns to gas
What is condensing
The stage of gas to liquid
What is meant by melting point
The temp at which it melts. Below this temp it will stay as a solid
What is meant by boiling point.
The temp at which the substance boils. Above this temp it will change to a gas
At which temp (compared to melting and boiling) will the substance be in a liquid state
Any temp in between the melting and boiling state
What is sublimation
The stage when solid turns to gas
Give an example of a substance that sublimes
Carbon dioxide
How can you measure the boiling point.
1) The temperature/ heat
2) The results plotted on the diagram
3) The level section
How can you use melting point to tell whether a solid substance is pure
It will have a flat surface if it is pure but would have a sharp surface if it’s not pure
What is the difference between boiling and evaporating
Evaporation is when the particles escape from the surface. Boiling is when it bubbles throughout the liquid.
When particles bump into or hit each other we say they…..
Collide
What is diffusion
It is when an area of high concentration turns into an area of low concentration
