Particles Flashcards
(36 cards)
What is a pure substance?
A material made up of only one type of particle.
This includes elements and compounds.
How is each element represented?
By a unique symbol.
What does the atomic number of an element represent?
The number of protons in the element.
Where are all known elements listed?
On the periodic table of elements.
What do elements in the same group have in common?
They have the same number of valence electrons.
What do elements in the same period have in common?
They have the same number of energy levels.
What are the main categories of elements?
- Metals
- Non-metals
- Metalloids
What are characteristics of metals?
- Good conductors of heat and electricity
- Sonorous
- Shiny (lustrous)
- Malleable
- Ductile
- Found on the left-hand side of the periodic table
What are characteristics of non-metals?
- Poor conductors of heat and electricity
- Dull
- Brittle
- Found on the right-hand side of the periodic table
What are metalloids?
Elements that have both metal and non-metal properties.
Where are metalloids located on the periodic table?
Around the zigzag line separating metals and non-metals.
What are examples of diatomic molecules?
- H2
- O2
- N2
- Cl2
- Br2
- I2
- F2
What is the ratio of atoms in a compound?
Atoms are always in a fixed ratio.
How are compounds formed?
Through chemical reactions.
How can compounds be broken down?
By chemical methods like heating or electrolysis (decomposition).
What are covalent (molecular) compounds?
Compounds made of non-metal atoms sharing electrons.
What are ionic compounds?
Usually made of metals and non-metals, formed when atoms transfer electrons.
What do ionic compounds create?
Positive and negative ions that attract each other.
What do organic compounds contain?
Carbon and are found in living things.
What is a separating method?
A way to split a mixture into its different parts based on behavior such as size, solubility, boiling point, or magnetic properties.
What is filtration?
Separates insoluble solids from liquids using a filter.
What is evaporation?
Removes a liquid by heating, leaving the dissolved solid behind.
What is fractional distillation?
A process used to separate a mixture of liquids with different boiling points.
What is distillation?
A process used to separate a liquid from a solution based on boiling points.
