Parts of Brain Flashcards
(18 cards)
Frontal Lobe
Associated with judgement and decision making
Parietal Lobe
Interprets sensory information and visual information/cues, processes language and mathematics as well as spatial information and navigation
Occipital Lobe
Processor of visual stimuli/information
Cerebellum
Controls balance and voluntary motor skills. Coordinates fine muscle, balance and some perception and cognition
Brainstem/Medulla
Connects brain and body/nervous systems. Controls basic life functions such as heartbeat
Temporal Lobe
Perception/interpretation of sound
Corpus Callosum
Bundle of nerves that connect left and right hemispheres of brain
Motor Cortex and Sensory Cortex
Control voluntary muscle movement, main sensory area for sense of touch
Limbic Lobe/System
Complex of nerves that interconnects forebrain structures (emotions, drives, memory, etc.)
Thalamus
Brain’s ‘switchboard’. Relays sensory information to cerebral cortex. (ex. air traffic control)
Hippocampus
Involved in formation and retrieval of memories (I’d remember if I saw a hippo on campus)
Pons
Connector of frontal lobe and cerebellum and is involved in sleeping, waking, movement and dreaming
Pituitary Gland
Controls growth and development as well as function of endocrine glands
Amygdala
Controls her basic emotions and is involved in the formation of emotional memory (Amy controls her emotions and remembers the time Sheldon broke her heart, examples of emotions would include happiness, anxiety, fear, etc.)
Hypothalamus
Small structure beneath the thalamus that governs drives (hunger, thirst, sex, etc.)
Reward System of Brain (no one specific area)
Associated with reinforcement
Basal Ganglia
Tight clusters of nerves that are very interconnected. Recieve information from several different regions of the cerebral cortex. Once BG have processed this information, they return it to the motor cortex via the thalamus
Reticular Formation
Diffuse set of neurons that helps screen incoming information and controls (non-sexual!) arousal
