Parts of Eye Flashcards
(16 cards)
Iris
Colored part of the eye. Opens and closes the pupil.
Pupil
the adjustable opening in the center of the eye through which light enters
Sclera
white part of the eye
Lens
the transparent structure behind the pupil that changes shape to help focus images on the retina
Vitreous Humor
the transparent jellylike tissue filling the eyeball behind the lens.
Aqueous Humor
fluid in the eye, found between the cornea and the lens
Retina
Light sensitive layer of the eye; contains rods and cones
Cornea
The clear tissue that covers the front of the eye
optic nerve
the nerve that carries neural impulses from the eye to the brain
Visible Light
The type of light on the electromagnetic spectrum that the human eye needs in order to see.
Fovea
the central focal point in the retina, around which the eye’s cones cluster
Cones
receptor cells in the retina allowing us to see in color
Rods
retinal receptors that detect black, white, and gray; necessary for peripheral and twilight vision, when cones don’t respond
peripheral vision
ability to see objects as they come into the outer edges of the visual field
Refract
When light rays bend as they enter the eye
Invert
when an image is turned upside down as it is projected onto the retina
