What is a verb?
An action or state
What is a noun?
The name of a thing or person
What is an adjective?
A describing word, it describes a noun
What is a determiner?
Limits or ‘determines’ a noun
E.g a, an, the, two, some, many
What is an adverb?
Describes a verb, adjective or adverb
E.g. quickly, silently, well, badly, very, really
What is a pronoun?
It replaces a noun
E.g. I, you, she, he, some
What is a preposition?
It links a noun to another word
E.g. to, at, after, on, but
What is a conjunction?
A word that joins clauses, sentences or words
E.g. and, but, when
What is an interjection?
A short exclamation Sometimes inserted into a sentence
E.g. oh!, ouch!, hi!, well
What is a transitive verb?
-A transitive verb is an action verb that has a direct object to receive that action
-it answers the question ‘what?’
What is an intransitive verb?
Action verbs that do not have an object receiving the action
What are the types of nouns?
-common
-proper
-concrete
-abstract
-count
-non count
-collective
-compound
What is a common noun?
Any noun in the general sense
E.g. church, school, car
What is a proper noun?
Any specific noun; always starts with a capital letter
What is a concrete noun?
Any noun that impacts any of the five senses
E.g. chair, computer, St. Mark
What is an abstract noun?
Any noun that does not impact any of the five senses
-happiness, anger, determination
What is a count noun?
Any noun that can be counted
E.g. stars, pen, table
What is a non count noun?
Any noun that cannot be counted
E.g. sand, water, hair, grass
What is a collective noun?
Any singular noun that represents a collection of things
E.g. bouquet, herd, audience, army
What is a compound noun?
-Any noun made up of more than one word
-open compound: has a space in between
E.g. real estate, bank account
-closed compound: has no space in between
E.g. cupboard, butterfly
-Hyphenated compound: has a hyphen in it
E.g. paper-clip
What are the types of verbs?
-Action verb
-linking verbs
-verb phrases
What is an action verb?
-Tells what someone or something does
-can express either physical or mental action
What are linking verbs?
-Links the subject of a sentence with a word or expression that describes the subject
-A linking verb does not show action
What are verb phrases?
-A verb phrase consists of the main verb and all it’s helping verbs (auxillary verbs)
-The words that accompany the main verb is called auxillary or helping verbs
