Companionway
The left side of the boat facing foreward
Port
The right side of the boat facing foreward
Starboard
The low space in the deck where the crew sits and the tiller is located
Cockpit
The back of the boat
Stern
The flat or slightly curved surface a the stern of the boat
Transom
The steering foil, directed by a tiller, that is used to turn the boat
Rudder
The lever arm attached to the rudder that allows you to steer the boat
Tiller
A handle attached to the tiller which allows the helmsman to sit further out to the side
Tiller Extension
The “body” of the boat that floats in the water
Hull
The weighted vertical fin at the bottom of the boat. Its weight reduces tipping (heeling) while its shape keeps the boat from sliding sideways through the water
Keel, Weight/Healing/Sliding
The flat surface area on top of the boat
